 Myths About Hypnosis

MYTH:  “Hypnosis is a truth serum.”‘  FALSE!

Truth:   You will not divulge secrets unless you choose to.  You cannot be overpowered or controlled. You can lie in hypnosis and edit when hypnotized.

A person in hypnosis retains enough awareness and control to NOT say anything that he isn’t ready to make known.   Hypnotherapy-with guidance from a professional—can get in touch with his deepest, strongest feelings.   Memories of feelings are never purely objective; they represent the person’s perception and feelings at the time of the event or experience.   And a hypnotherapist cannot make a client find out or talk about how he feels about something or someone.  That only happens when the client chooses to and feels safe to do so.

MYTH:  “Hypnosis makes you do something you don’t want to do.”  FALSE!

Truth:  You will not do anything in hypnosis that is outside your moral code. You do not surrender your will to the hypnotherapist; the ego never goes away.

MYTH:  “The strong-minded are not easily hypnotized.”     FALSE

Truth:  in fact, just the opposite:  the more intelligent and creative people find it easier to relax and enter into hypnosis.  Anyone who understands the language being spoken and who WANTS to be hypnotized can be hypotized.

MYTH:  “You can lose consciousness or get stuck in hypnosis.”    FALSE!

Truth: You do not lose consciousness or go to sleep.   You cannot get stuck in hypnosis.

Hypnosis is the level of awareness that puts you in contact with both the conscious mind and subconscious mind simultaneously.  This is the dual nature of our minds – you are never unconscious during hypnosis. It is a natural, yet altered state with a critical factor of the conscious mind is relaxed and focused concentration is created.

Hypnosis is a cooperative relationship between the therapist and the client. During hypnosis, you are in full control over your mind and your body.  You can come out of hypnosis anytime you want.  Sometimes people feel so good in hypnosis that they want to stay in trance
a little longer.  The hypnotherapist can bring a subject back to alertness with a simple instruction.

MYTH:  “Hypnosis is brainwashing.” FALSE!

Truth:  Brainwashing involves forcibly requiring someone to give up their beliefs.  It this worked, hypnotherapy would be 100% effective.  For example, hypnotherapy, properly applied, is still only 70 to 80% effective for stopping smoking.  The senses are generally enhanced during hypnosis. The client hears and is acutely aware of everything going on.– in many cases, more than in the fully awakened state.

MYTH:  “You can be made to quack like a duck or act like a chicken.”   FALSE!   Truth:  This is not Professional, Clinical Hypnosis.
This is hypnosis for entertainment shows and only works when people are willing to act this way voluntarily.  Typically, the stage hypnotist jokes around with the audience first, as he assesses the person’s willingness to act this way.

HYPNOTHERAPY vs. THERAPY?

Therapy appeals only to the conscious mind and is also an important part of making changes. It elicits the help of the intellect to resolve problems and relieve stress. We can gain a lot of knowledge through therapy, but sometimes — the more intellectualizing and rationalizing we do—the greater the tendency to develop alibis and rationalizations to protect the subconscious from changing our behaviors.

Sometimes, despite your best intentions to change things, you may find that you still can’t make the progress you would like to make. By creating access to the subconscious mind with hypnosis—where so much of our behavior is programmed—you are able to finally find the ways to make the desired changes.

The most compelling reason to use hypnotherapy is to empower you  to make the changes you want to make — to have a more satisfying life.

If you want to know more…….

Hypnotherapy is the set of skills and techniques that uses Hypnosis as the tool.

Hypnosis is a natural, yet altered, state of mind.  Hypnosis works by relaxing the barrier between the conscious and subconscious mind, allowing access to the subconscious and healing parts of the mind.

Hypnosis has been formally approved by the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association for at least 30 years.  There are thousands of professionals using the techniques and some hospitals have started to hire full-time professional hypnotherapists to help their patients.

There is nothing dangerous about hypnosis. You are not asleep, you are not out of control. You are just in a relaxed state, where your daily subconscious thoughts, worries and concerns are temporarily suspended—so that you can discover both the blocks and the positive resources that reside there.  You are actually more alert in hypnosis – which gives you access to a problem–solving intelligence, that we all have within us.

Your subconscious mind has memorized all of your experiences, your feelings and your perceptions.  Emotions, experiences, memories and perceptions determine (or program) your beliefs about yourself and the world.  If negative feelings and perceptions have been programmed into your subconscious minds, you may find yourself acting automatically:  whether you choose to behave or feel a certain way–and despite your best efforts–it seems to keep happening.

Your refocused attention helps you to get new ideas into the subconscious mind – holding the mind with that idea, mixing it with emotion and leading to new behaviors.  During hypnosis, this heightened responsiveness to suggestion, direction and instruction helps you to make your desired changes. Unfortunately, many people call themselves hypnotherapists–sometimes with very little education or hands-on experience.
